Call for entries for Digital Opera Performance 2023/24

The Digital Opera Performance competition for digital theater scenography and directing is open for entries from August 1 to September 30, 2023.

The competition of media artists and directors of theatrical multimedia will be held for the fifth time as part of the 5th International Festival of Contemporary Opera Art "Digital Opera Saint-Petersburg / Opera of the Digital Age" in St. Petersburg.

In honor of the 225th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Pushkin, which will be widely celebrated in 2024, the theme of the competition task: “Pushkin's Tales. Life is like a miracle".

The participants will create multimedia projects for the theater stage based on the works of the poet based on classical music with the participation of the choir and opera stars. The numbers of the finalists will be combined into a large-scale multimedia show "Pushkin's Tales. Life is like a miracle" and presented to the public on the stage of the Alexandrinsky Theater on April 23 and 24, 2024, accompanied by a symphony orchestra.

Musical accompaniment for competitive projects - excerpts from operas by Russian composers: "The Tale of Tsar Saltan" and "The Golden Cockerel" by N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov, "Ruslan and Lyudmila" by M. I. Glinka and "The Mermaid" by A. S. Dargomyzhsky.

We invite media-artists and theatre multimedia directors to join us to create a spectacular modern performance dedicated to the work of one of the most famous poets of the world and the most valuable layer of Russian culture – tales.

When registering an application, directors must attach a brief explanation of an excerpt from the musical works proposed by the organizing committee, video artists - a portfolio.

The following are evaluated in the competition works: disclosure of the main idea of the performance, originality and creativity, work with space, the level of preparation of video content, the originality of the director's and scenographic decisions of the project, the level of mastery of special expressive means. Laureates and winners are determined by a professional jury based on the results of all public demonstrations of competitive projects. The jury of the competition includes recognized masters of the theater, show industry and media business - world stars of scenography, famous theater directors and artists, producers and theater directors.
